C1.1 Identify and compare a variety of repeating, growing, and shrinking patterns, including patterns found in real-life contexts, and compare linear growing patterns on the basis of their constant rates and initial values.

Activity 1: Identifying Patterns

Prepare a table as in the example below. Divide students into teams. Students will complete the table, justifying their answers, for each of the patterns below. Discuss the results as a class, making sure that the students justify their answers.

For each of the patterns, determine:

  • whether it is growing or shrinking;
  • whether it is linear or non-linear;
  • the value of the constant rate;
  • the initial value.

Justify your choice.

Pattern Growing or Shrinking Linear or Non-linear Constant Rate Initial Value (Term 0)

Activity 2: The Growth Rate (Linear Growing Pattern)

Prepare cards with graphical representations of linear growing patterns. The students will have to place the cards in the right order to match each question.

Sample Questions

  • Arrange their constant rates in ascending order.
  • Arrange their initial values (Term 0) in ascending order.
